IRVING, Texas - When Roy Williams chatted with reporters on Wednesday, he stood in front of his locker for about 25 minutes, basically giving textbook answers to a wide variety of questions regarding his lack of production so far this year.
But it was the last five minutes when Williams tossed out a few zingers that ended up making headlines. Williams not only proclaimed himself the No. 1 receiver despite Miles Austin's recent emergence, but said Tony Romo's passes haven't always been on target when the opportunity has been there to make a play.
Whether or not he intended to throw his quarterback on the bus - a procedure we've seen around these parts before involving receivers and quarterbacks - Williams spent Thursday clarifying some of his comments. He also squashed the comparisons between himself and Terrell Owens.
"I didn't complain. I didn't complain that I didn't get the ball," Williams said Thursday. "I got seven opportunities in the (Seattle) ballgame. All I said was that, when it comes to me, it's not there. I'm not saying it can't be fixed, because that's what we do every day. We try to work on it and get it fixed. I'm not a T.O. or I'm not trying to be a T.O. I don't know why people are trying to put me in that category, because I'm happy to win. I've said that 100 times. I don't understand why people won't just say Ok and leave it alone. But I'm a professional football player and am trying to get this thing right."
As for his relationship with Romo, Williams said he hasn't said anything to his quarterback about his statements and doesn't plan to.
"Nothing. We just work," Williams said on Thursday. "We worked extra after practice yesterday to get some things ironed out and we're going to do the same thing today. I think that's going to be our trend for the rest of the year until that light switch goes on."
Williams has channeled his frustrations when asked about his slow start - 14 catches for 249 yards and two touchdowns. His comments Wednesday about still being the No. 1 receiver raised some eyebrows, mainly because of Austin more than doubling his receiving total so far, catching 26 passes for 563 yards and six touchdowns.
"I know I can't really win in this situation," Williams said. "I'm happy here. I'm not mad or upset about anything. The focus should be on this big game we've got this week. I'm done talking about Romo to Williams."
As for Romo, he didn't seem fazed by the questioning. It's not like he hasn't heard it all before.
"Roy is good. We have a good relationship. Roy cares about the game," Romo said. "He's out here working hard. He's getting better every time he steps out here. That's all you can ask.
"We've been through this before with people trying to divide a football team," Romo added. "We're too strong for that. I know the media is going to try to make certain things appear what they may not have actually been, things of that nature. This team is too committed to win and too committed to improve to let anything divide this team."
And that's the last thing Williams said he wants to be, a distraction leading into the Cowboys' showdown against the Eagles.
"We're all about Philly. I don't know what this is all about. You know what I mean? This is a big week for us as a football team and I said that (Wednesday)," Williams said. "Everything is working for us - offense, defense and special teams. The only thing that isn't working for us is Romo-to-Williams and it's a big deal. It's the only thing that y'all have to talk about."
